The balance of payments (BOP) for 1st quarter 2008 yielded a surplus of US$1.7 billion, 20.8 percent higher than the US$1.4 billion surplus registered in the same quarter a year ago.

The year-on-year headline inflation rate in the Philippines jumped to a double-digit figure of 11.4 percent in June from 9.5 percent in May. This was the highest rate since May 1994 (11.5%). Except for the fuel, light and water (FLW) index, all the commodity groups recorded higher annual inflation rates during the month. Inflation a year ago was 2.3 percent. (NSO Press Release)

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry expanded by 7.3 percent in April 2008 after contracting by 5.0 percent in March, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI).
Volume of Production Index (VoPI), on a year-on-year basis, improved by 5.2 percent in April 2008, a turnaround from March`s 6.1 percent fall.

The poverty incidence of families went up from 24.4 percent in 2003 to 26.9 in 2006. In terms of population, it went up to 32.9 from the estimate of 30 percent.
